Workshop Focus Topics by Day

Day 1: Trends, Thresholds, and Tipping Points in Marine Ecosystems (Monday 7/18/11)
This session will explore past and future physical, chemical, and biological trends, thresholds, and tipping points and their implications for marine ecosystems.

Day 2: Joint Session: OCB and U.S. CLIVAR (Tuesday 7/19/11)
Given the overlapping scientific and observational interests of the two programs, one day of this year’s OCB summer workshop will be dedicated to a joint session with the U.S. CLIVAR Program. The goals of this joint session are to explore science issues of common interest and identify initial high-priority research topics that may lead to joint activities (e.g., the formation of focused working groups) between U.S. CLIVAR and OCB researchers over the next decade.

Day 3: Toward the Implementation of a Global Autonomous Biogeochemical Observing System (Wednesday 7/20/11) Building on the community momentum from previous workshops, this session will progress toward the development of a detailed implementation strategy for a long-term global biogeochemical observing system using chemical and biological sensors deployed on autonomous platforms.

Day 4: Project updates and closing remarks (Thursday, 7/21/11)

Cyndy Chandler will present a talk on day 1 of the workshop highlighting BCO-DMO capabilities and featuring data from the recent North Atlantic Bloom Experiment 2008 project (see 3.3 MB BCO-DMO_DataMgt PDF file).  A poster (see link to 1.7 MB PDf file below) in the Tuesday session will show how several distributed and independent data repositories, BCO-DMO, CCHDO, CDIAC and NODC complement each other to support reseacrhers in the OCB and CLIVAR research communities.
