BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL OCEANOGRAPHY DATA RESOURCES FOR COASTAL AND MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING
Abstract: Data access requirements related to Ecosystem Based Management and Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning challenge data managers to deliver data in new ways. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO, http://bco-dmo.org/) was created to manage oceanographic biogeochemical, ecological and companion physical data contributed by investigators funded by the NSF Biological and Chemical Oceanography Sections and the Office of Polar Programs Antarctic Organisms & Ecosystems Program. The BCO-DMO data system relies on metadata, the supporting documentation describing the ‘who, what, where, when, how and why’ of research projects, cruises and data sets, to power the database interfaces and enable researchers to make accurate use of the data in collaborative research. Recent enhancements to BCO-DMO data discovery, access and delivery systems include: exposing metadata in standards-compliant, machine-readable formats; Open Geospatial Consortium standards- compliant data products; semantically-enabled, faceted browse and search; mapping of local controlled vocabulary terms to community-adopted vocabularies; and additional formats for data exchange and download. The new capabilities make the BCO-DMO served data more accessible to an extended group beyond the original core of NSF-funded marine researchers.

Session S77 Poster B1089:
DATA MANAGEMENT AND DATA AVAILABILITY IN SUPPORT OF ECOSYSTEM BASED MANAGEMENT AND MARINE SPATIAL PLANNING
Abstract: Ecosystem Based Management and Marine Spatial Planning require access to location and abundance data supported by accompanying metadata as well as co-located hydrographic and other environmental data. Marine ecological and biogeochemical research are conducted using a wide variety of sampling, experimental, and modeling systems. The diversity of data types and the data volume produced by researchers are growing exponentially and they need to be aggregated, integrated, analyzed, and shared to yield a comprehensive scientific understanding of complex ocean processes. In this presentation we show the capabilities of the Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) data system. In particular, we feature interactive text-based and geospatial tools for data discovery and visualization, data search developments, and easy downloading options.
