The R2R event number is assigned to each underway scientific sampling event by the R2R ELOG event logging system during a cruise. It is UTC time-based and has 3 digits appended to the string (.xxx) to ensure that it is unique within a cruise. It also includes the unique vessel identifier therefore making it unique across the US academic fleet.
