Expanded Form with Hundreds and Thousands Place

Do you remember our place value tables? 🤔

Here’s one for Ones, Tens, and Hundreds places:

Now, do you remember how to identify the place values of a number?

Let’s review with 862.

How many hundreds do we have?

8 Hundreds

How many tens?

6 Tens

How many ones?

2 Ones

Great job! 💪 Now, why do you need to know this?

👉 Each place has a value. 👈

2 Ones = 2

👉 Every **ten **= 10

6 Tens = 60

👉 Every **hundred **= 100

8 Hundreds = 800

You can use each of these values to write a number in **expanded form**.

**Expanded form** is a way of writing numbers so that we can **see the value of each digit** in the number.

We write expanded form as an addition equation.

Let’s try it with 862.

We write out each value with plus signs:

800+60+ 2

Let's try this again with a number that has a thousands place.

3,725

What number is in the Thousands place?

3

What about the Hundreds place?

7

Tens place?

2

And Ones place?

5

👉 Now, let's figure out the value of each number.

3 Thousands = 3,000

7 Hundreds = 700

2 Tens = 20

5 Ones = 5

We can put all of these values together in an addition equation to write the number in **expanded form**:

3,000+700+20+5

Let’s try it again!

👉 What is the expanded form of 395?

300 + 90 + 5

👉 What is the expanded form of 7,903?

7,000 + 900 + 3

Did you notice that 0 is in the tens place?

0 Tens = 0

**Tip:** We can leave zero (0) out of the expanded form.

Great job! Now, you can write an expanded form of numbers in the hundreds.
