Description

Concentration of major dissolved nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate) sampled from CTD hydrocasts on the MV1008 cruise in the Costa Rica Dome (CRD) region of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean.

Methods & Sampling

Dataset acquisition description

Seawater samples were collected from 8 depths throughout the water column during CTD casts. 50 ml of sample from each depth was filtered directly from the Niskin bottle through a 0.1-um filter capsule and frozen at -80°C for the analysis of major nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate) back on shore. Major nutrient concentrations were estimated using Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) at the Analytical Facility, Marine Science Institute, UCSB. Samples were run on a Lachat Instuments QuikChem 8000 FIA.

A Niskin bottle (a next generation water sampler based on the Nansen bottle) is a cylindrical, non-metallic water collection device with stoppers at both ends.
