During cruise AR89, at night, trawls were conducted with a 3 m² Tucker Trawl, consisting of 1/4-inch knotless nylon for the primary net, 290 mesh for the secondary net and cod-end, and 290 mesh in the cod-end. The net was equipped with a timer that allowed it to open at the required depth and then close before being brought to the surface.
At the end of the net was a temperature-insulated cod-end that closed when the net closed, ensuring that animals were brought up in cold water and were not exposed to light during ascent to the surface. Once at the surface, the cod-end was detached from the net and brought into a light-tight room, where animals were sorted under dim red light.
