Experimental oxygen consumption for two iron oxidizing bacteria at 5˚C from March to November 2018
Abstract:
Previous experiments in this dataset have incubated FeOB at 20°C to represent a hydrothermal vent environment. However, many FeOB also live at the ocean floor away from any vent activity. Here Mariprofundus ferrooxydans PV-1 and Ghiorsea bivora TAG-1 were incubated at 5°C with zero-valent iron as their iron source to examine how they might affect iron oxidation rates at the seafloor. Oxygen consumption was measured as a proxy for iron oxidation. For both strains there was little to no growth and oxygen consumption rates were essentially the same as killed controls.
